You know what I love about New York? (Besides everything...) The street fairs, the bazaars, the bonanzas!
If you don't know what I'm talking about, let me tell you about these gems. They pop up all over the place, so you're bound to run into one somewhere in the city. These fairs mostly take place in parks or blocked off streets. And they house everything from food to jewelry to clothes to plants to kiddie rides. Not only is this something fun to do, you're also helping small businesses and finding unique products at the same time.
I'm lucky enough to live in a pretty happenin' neighborhood in Queens, where Steinway or Broadway are blocked off whenever there is a holiday. These photos were taken at the 30th Avenue Astoria Festival a few blocks from my home.
Since I'm basically a regular at these craft fairs, I've compiled some tips to help you:
1. Bring cash. Some tents will take cards (usually with a minimum), but most would like cash. If you order food or drink, there are also tipping jars.
2. Dress for the weather. If it's hot and sunny, bring your shades and sunblock. If it's holiday time, bundle up! And don't forget to wear comfortable shoes for walking.
3. Walk the whole fair. A lot of times there are multiple vendors selling similar items (such as plants or empanadas) so you can ensure you'll find the best deal once you've seen it all. It's only a few blocks anyway, and walking is good for you, right?
4. Converse with the merchants! Yes, they're trying to sell you stuff. But most of them are very knowledgeable and would love to share their craft. I recently learned how to take care of an aloe plant (and I didn't even buy one).
These pop-ups are a great place to find affordable, one-of-a-kind items. I usually grab a necklace or two as well as some home decor. There really is something for everyone (and they make good gifts, wink wink). Not to mention you can eat and drink as you browse. Coco Loco was at the last one I attended, carving some fresh coconuts to drink - and let me tell you, it was DELICIOUS.
So take a stroll and enjoy everything the town has to offer!
