If there's one thing you should know about me, it's that I am the definition of a "beach bum." Summer is my favorite season, and the beach is my favorite place. There's just something about the sand beneath my toes and the salty water kissing my skin. What more can you expect from a water sign? #Pisces
The summer months of my childhood were spent at my aunt's in Margate, weekend trips to the rest of the Jersey Shore, and seven full days in Ocean City, Maryland. And now that I am in NYC, I'm always looking for a beach day to escape the concrete jungle. Read on for my top (cheap) picks for a day in the sun.
1. Brighton Beach, Brooklyn
Brighton Beach is a quick trip off the Q train. Although it is very close to Coney Island (yes, you can see it next door), it is not nearly as crowded. Not to mention - it's free! The town is full of Russian and Middle Eastern restaurants, grocery stores, and boutiques. So go get your daily dose of Vitamin Sea as well as some authentic (and delicious) Baklava.
2. Coney Island, Brooklyn
Besides the beautiful beach, my favorite part of Coney Island is its boardwalk. It's full of famous chain foods such as Nathan's dogs, pizza, and ice cream. And we can't forget about the RIDES - it's one of the country's first amusement parks! I stick to roller coasters, like the Cyclone. Did you know it's 91 years old?! New York Aquarium is also right beside the beach, which is a great spot to take a break from the sun.
3. Rockaway Beach, Rockaway
Do the Rockaway! Lean back... But really, do it. You can get there by train or car - it's a lovely view if you're driving in. The beach is pretty busy, perfect for mingling. The cutest restaurants and bars are just a hop, skip, and jump away from the dunes. One of my favorite little Mexican spots, Pico, is housed in the tiny town. This is also the city's only legal surfing beach. Just be careful, this year part of the beach is closed due to safety hazards.
We all love affordable beach days right? But I get it, sometimes you need to splurge, too. So now that I've laid out all my cheap beach trips, I'm going to tell you about some of my favorite beaches in New York if you're looking to spend a little cash or stay a long weekend.
Long Beach, Long Island
Now, I may be a little biased as I spent many, many date nights here while I was first getting to know my boyfriend. BUT there are a bunch of really great things about Long Beach.
First thing's first, the sand is so soft. There are lifeguards if swimming is your thing. As you can imagine, it's a very loooooong beach - with a very long boardwalk. Hotels, restaurants, bars, and shops line the sand. One of my favorite spots for dinner (and I mean the mussels) is Allegria Hotel - it also has rooms so you can stay for a few days.
During the warmer months, Long Beach hosts Movie Nights. Aka, the greatest date idea. Set up a blanket or chairs, bring some wine, and enjoy snuggles and a film with your significant other. (The boy took me to The Rocky Horror Picture Show here a couple years ago.)
In regards to finances, it'll cost you about $24 to take the LIRR (Long Island Railroad). And to get onto the beach during the day, it's $15 per person. Add some more for food, drinks, and/or lodging.
Fire Island, Long Island
Talk about a getaway! Fire Island feels like you're no where near New York City - especially since there are only shacks and wagons on the island. Restaurants and bars line the coast; it's super easy to bar hop and dance the night away. The island also has its very own signature drink: The Rocket Fuel. It's absolutely delicious, but be sure to pace yourself. And get ready for some good food, like açaí bowls and seafood.
From the dock, it's a five minute walk to the beach. Most of the adorable hotels and motels offer amenities like umbrellas, chairs, and bikes. If you're in the mood for adventure, there's a lighthouse at one end. Or hey, shopping in the boutiques is always a good time to grab a souvenir.
