That view, am I right? That’s what drew me to Beacon, NY - but what I ended up getting was so much more.
Upon discovering this little town, I knew it would be a great place to surprise my boyfriend for his birthday. Only an hour and a half on the Metro North would bring us to our destination. And to top it off, I found the purrfect airbnb. Yep, you read that right -this airbnb listing literally had “friendly felines” in the title. And with both of us being cat people, I couldn’t pass it up.
Meet Sokito and Bob. Sokito is a 17 year old male with one eye. He is the neediest yet sweetest kitty I’ve ever met. He followed us from room to room and always looked for cuddles. Bob is a 16 year old female, but she acts more like a kitten. She’s much more independent than Sokito, but she welcomed his and our company.
The airbnb itself was so quaint and unique, with the Hudson view and thoughtful decor touches, but the cats really made it feel like home.
Unplanned, we got snowed in. Which meant more time with the cats! One of the best parts of the airbnb was the lack of TV - Gio and I were really able to unplug for a long weekend and enjoy each other (and of course the kitties). We caught up on reading, played the 1987 version of Life, sipped on vino and cooked a homemade Italian meal, and conversed for hours. One thing I love about my relationship is how we can spend every minute of every day together yet we never run out of things to talk about.
Oh and of course, there were plenty of cat naps.
On Saturday we grabbed a bite for breakfast at the adorable Bank Square Coffeehouse, at the beginning of Main St. They even had gluten free treats! Super chill vibes with locals sitting around and jamming lightly on guitars.
Next we headed to Dia:Beacon, a very interesting art gallery. I connected with some works more than others. And some just disturbed me, like the pieces in the basement (fitting, right?). If you’re interested, the artist’s name is Bruce Nauman, and all I’m saying is he must have been very troubled.
Before the snowstorm hit, we grabbed dinner at Kitchen Sink Food & Drink, which was DELICIOUS! If you’re in the area, I highly recommend. Just make sure you make reservations, they fill up fast.
We didn’t get to explore the quaint town as much as I wanted to, but now we have even more of a reason to visit again. Not to mention, we’re already missing the kitties too much.
